Everything you need to know about joining us in the water

Registration & Heat Info

All surfers must register via Liveheats by 3pm the Thursday before the competition.

On comp day, check the Competition Board near the judging area for your heat time and rashie colour.

Heat Format & Timing

Standard heats run for 15 minutes, unless changed by the Head Judge due to conditions.

Heats start from the water. Once the YELLOW flag goes up for the previous heat, you’ll have 5 minutes to paddle out. In some conditions, beginner divisions may have a beach start.

Flags, Hooters & Starts
  • GREEN flag signals the official start of the heat
  • YELLOW flag means 5 minutes (or less) remaining
  • RED flag signals the end of the heat
  • A hooter will also sound at the beginning and end of each heat.
  • You must not paddle out early or interfere with the heat in progress.
  • Waves ridden before the GREEN flag or after the hooter will not be scored.
  • After the RED flag, return directly to the beach, lying down on your board, and hand in your rashie.
Scoring & Judging
  • Surfers may have up to 10 waves judged per heat.
  • Each wave is scored from 0.1 to 10, with your best two waves counting toward your total score.
  • A wave will not be scored unless both hands leave the rails, except for advanced surfers performing critical manoeuvres using a rail grab.
  • Judging is based on the surfer’s division and ability level.
Interference

Interference on another surfer results in:

  • The wave not being scored
  • Only half the score of your second-best wave being counted
  • Judges determine all drop-ins and other interference. The Head Judge’s decision is final.
  • Any protests must be lodged immediately after the heat to the president, vice president, or comp director.
Season Points

Each monthly competition awards points in line with Surfing NSW guidelines.

Points accumulate across the season and determine final placings at the end-of-year presentations. This is based on 70% of comps held, for example, if there are 9 events in the series, your top 6 event results will be counted.

On the Beach

Free surfing is not permitted in the competition area unless you are in a heat.

Any competitor surfing the comp zone outside their heat will not receive points for that event.

All competitors must:

  • Return rashies immediately
  • Help carry gear off the beach
  • Assist with beach clean-up
